Jye & Baylee: A Surprise Proposal at Penfolds Magill Estate

Capturing a surprise proposal is always an adrenaline hit, but Jye and Baylee’s moment at Penfolds Magill Estate really kept me on my toes. Since they were visiting from Queensland for a quick weekend getaway, I didn't have the luxury of meeting Jye in person beforehand to scout the vines or walk through the "X marks the spot."

Instead, it all came down to one focused phone call and a bit of stealthy coordination with the Penfolds team. When you’re shooting a surprise like this, you’re essentially working in "stealth mode", relying entirely on a shared plan and trust. I spent the lead-up chatting with the staff to make sure the timing was perfect and that I’d be in the right position to catch the moment as shoon as Jye dropped to one knee.

There’s a specific kind of pressure in having never met the couple until the moment they walk into your frame, but the payoff is incredible. Seeing Baylee’s reaction through the lens made the whole thing click (no pun intended :D). She was absolutely thrilled!

There’s something about a proposal that keeps you on your toes—you’ve got one shot to get it right, no redos. It’s exactly why I love this style of photography; it’s just about being there, camera ready, for that one split second where everything is totally real and unscripted.
