A 1920s-Inspired Engagement Party: Eleanor & Gaige

There's something about a couple who can't stop looking at each other that makes for an unforgettable night behind the camera. That's exactly what Eleanor and Gaige brought to their engagement celebration in Adelaide, held in a moody basement space on Leigh Street with a romantic, jazzy, almost 1920s inspired theme running through the whole night.

Starting with the Couple, Away from the Noise

We began the evening before the guests arrived, with just Eleanor and Gaige. These quiet, unhurried portraits are some of my favourite moments to shoot. Without a room full of people watching, couples relax into themselves, and you get genuine connection instead of a posed smile. Low, warm lighting and a bit of vintage glamour in the styling made this session feel like it belonged in another decade, and the portraits reflect that.

Capturing the Room Once it Filled

Once guests started arriving, the energy shifted completely. Live jazz, hand-crafted cocktails and Eleanor and Gaige's closest friends and family turned the space into exactly the kind of atmosphere I love photographing candidly. Low-light event photography like this is about anticipating moments rather than staging them: a laugh caught mid-sentence, a toast, the band leaning into a solo. Working handheld and largely unnoticed, the goal is always to document the night as it actually felt, not as a series of posed group shots.
